A Brief History of Oakland Charter Township
Oakland Township is one of the oldest townships in Michigan. Land hunters arrived in 1819, just a year after the first settlement in Oakland County, and pioneer families from New York soon followed. These early settlers built sturdy log homes and cleared land for farms, shaping the rural character the township still treasures today.
The township’s first settlement, known as the Kline Settlement, grew up around what is now the corner of Stoney Creek and Rochester Roads. At its peak, it had two churches and a schoolhouse. By 1837, when Michigan became a state, Oakland Township had reached the boundaries it keeps today.
Much of the early economy centered on a gristmill that Needham Hemingway built on Paint Creek in 1835. Hemingway had moved from New York and bought the land from the federal government. William Goodison later bought the mill. When the Michigan Central Railroad began stopping there in the 1870s, the area became known as Goodison’s Station, and the hamlet of Goodison still carries his name.
In the 20th century, the old mill site found new life as the Paint Creek Cider Mill, which began drawing crowds for fresh cider and donuts in 1960. The abandoned railroad bed nearby later became the Paint Creek Trail, Michigan’s first rail-to-trail project.
